ABOUT ME

Welcome in!

Hi there! My name is Shay Andrews. I am a 23 year old queer nonbinary person (they/them) who has always loved to create. Either known as IcarusArts or now SKAdesigns, I've been making art for over 8 years and been in theater arts (primarily acting) for over 13.

I am an artist and storyteller delving into many different mediums in order to portray fantastical and impactful creations. I am well versed in acrylic paints, alcohol markers, digital illustration, lino block and screen printing, as well as scenic art and design. I also have a love for making chainmail, book binding, and junk journaling and sometimes involve those projects within my art.

Some of my favorite motifs and ideas to play with are Victorian and Gothic aesthetics, medieval and fantasy worlds, Greek mythology, and allusions to queer people throughout time itself.

~ ARTIST STATEMENT ~

I have always seen myself as a storyteller at my core. Through mediums such as traditional painting, digital illustration, and even scenic design, I seek to craft stories both real and fantastical. I always seek to foster a connection with my audience, inviting them inside narratives and including interactive additions to my work to make them a part of the story as well. In my work there are often allusions to Gothic themes and architecture, Victorian era aesthetics and beliefs, as well as the tales of old through mythology and folk tales. In this evoking of the past contrasted against current ideals, I strive to portray the beauty, intricacies, and monstrousness of humanity inside narratives where we can find the soul of ourselves reflected within.

~ BIOGRAPHY ~

Shay Andrews is an artist living and creating in the Bay Area of California. They are currently in college to obtain a Bachelor in Fine Arts for Pictorial Arts with a minor in Theater Arts. Growing up in the Bay Area, Andrews was surrounded by beauty, tragedy, and the intricacies of human nature that inspire them to this day. Initially finding themself within the theater world as an actor, Andrews found their love of storytelling. As Covid began in 2020 and theater became more inaccessible to them, they then brought those ideas of narrative driven works into different mediums, and therefore their art practice.

Experimenting with crafting narratives through paintings, alcohol marker drawings, and scenic design they craft innovative and engaging worlds that capture the eye and emotion. Through implementing interactive additions to their work, they invite their audience to make themselves a part of the story, finding themselves within the brushstrokes.

Crafting worlds both realistic and fantastical, they find solace within the dark and gritty contrasted against the lightness of heroism and hope. Exploring narratives using Gothic and Victorian themes of love (particularly queer love), loss, and the secrets that lie there in, Shay Andrews seeks to encapsulate these core human traits in intriguing and dynamic ways. They often use allusions to mythologies such as Greek, Roman, and Egyptian, to illustrate the long history of human beings and their innate will to create and communicate with each other. Utilizing connection through interactivity and finding the reflection of oneself within a story, Andrews fosters intrigue and investigation of both the self as well as the systems and structures we as humans have created around us.
